Ok, I gotta tell someone about this who will appreciate it

This will be sort of another vent, so if you're not in the mood, you can stop reading now.

Anyway, I was instructed at work to make a form to collect data and send it to a database. I was sent an MS Word file with a mock up of the form, so I built the form part first and the ColdFusion part later.

Because these people are a bit finicky, I wanted them to look the form over and approve it before I started building the back end. So I started to load the form to the development server, but paused, and thought, "Yanno, I know exactly what's going to happen. They're going to click "submit", and it's not going to work, and I'm going to get flooded with emails".

So, in what I think is a brilliant idea, I instead take a screenshot of the form, and email it to them (them being a group of about a half dozen people). They approve the form, and I start building the back end.

Finally I get it working, load it (and the database) on the development server, and email the link to the group so they can test it out. Several hours pass, and I start getting emails claiming the form is not working. Since it works fine for me, I ask them to paste error messages into emails and send them to me.

They reply, telling me there are no error messages. The form is not accepting any data at all, and they can't even click the submit button. We go back and forth like this all day Friday, before, around 3pm, I finally figure out the problem.

    Ready for this?

I'm sure some of you have already guessed...

    They are....

...trying to type information into the jpeg image I sent them.

I wish I was making this up. An entire day... WASTED. To make it worse, the first report that the form wasn't working was a reply to the email with the link to the form. Somehow they overlooked that.

    Someone shoot me please.

Oh that's good! What was their reaction when you explained - or did you just run screaming from the building?

Ore yeah I can appreciate this.

There are also the times they send you scans of documents and want to know how hard it would be to change a few little typos.

"Why would it take so long, Shaun??... Can't you just take the text out of the .jpg ??"

Having been in support for 23 years, yes, as you suggested, I saw that coming.

At least you can laugh at it. But, this won't the the last experience like that. hehe
