The vast majority of directory links are very very weak and will not help most sites achieve their goals unless they are targeting very very niche categories or very long tail keywords.

High PR won't help you much if the page the link is on is weak and/or off topic.

Forget about paid links, Google has already devalued them.

You mainly need links from websites with the same content as you and go for ones with good pageranks as well

Aside from them being from a website related to your topic, they should also be placed on pages which don't have a lot of outbound links (the more websites a certain page is linking to, the less value a link has).

That's the way that the PR passed by the link is diluted, but I'm not sure that the other benefits a link gives are diluted in this way.

Let's just say that a page linking to hundreds of websites loses a lot of "credibility" in the eyes of any search engine (especially if most of those links have nothing to do with the website's topic)

Not true. Pages link this are judged like every other webpage. On its merit. Page like these get few to little backlinks and thus rank poorly and carry little weight. No arbitrary penalty needed.

So, in your opinion, search engines wouldn't look down upon an auto-related website, for example, linking to hundreds of gambling/pills websites? Of course they would

Not from an SEO point of view. Search engines don't care who you link to. Outbound links neither help nor hurt your rankings (in terms of the links, not the PR issues associated with external links).

The only times this is bad is when you link to a bad neighborhood or if it appears you are selling links. But that those are different issues.

This is exactly what I was referring to when I have given the auto-related resource linking to gambling/pills websites example. Also, if a website is linking to a lot of unrelated ones, it's quite clear that those links have been purchased by the webmasters, which brings us right back to me advising against the "services" of websites who will link to just about anyone

There are lots of reasons not to link to unrelated websites and you are correct when you say it is a bad practice in general.

Please remember that reciprocal links are not necessarily an evil thing. They have their place in the big picture too. Just think about it. I have a good site, you have a good site - we find out about each other and link to one another. It could be perfectly honest and appropriate.

    From Matt Cutts:
Reciprocal links by themselves aren’t automatically bad, but we’ve communicated before that there is such a thing as excessive reciprocal linking.

Would you say then that reciprocal links are a goos thing as long as they're with related sites?

Can too many reciprocal links, even with related sites hurt you?

Nothing necessarily wrong with some reciprocal links, as long as the amount of links are not "excessive", according to Matt Cutts.

Too many can hurt you, yes.

Do you have a source for that? I can't find anything on Matt Cutts' blog where he talks about this specifically.

Once again it mentions 'excessive' without giving much guidance. It's probably a combination of the link quality, percentage of total links and the acquisition rate.

Didn't read all the posts on this thread - but here is my personal view of quality links-

Best links -- Digg links --

Ooops sorry- but not directly. Create hihigh quality contents, submit to digg and if you get o the front-page, you get hundreds of organic links.

Otherwise BEST LINKS = Related+Old+Trusted by Google (sites with sitelinks) + high PR. Thats my definition of high quality link.
