Using redirect to avoid Splash Page : ok?

I have a site with a splash page where the user chooses a language (English or French). I want to get rid of this page as I think it is negatively affecting my SEO. There is the index page then all the other pages are in one of two folders ( "en" or "fr").

Because all of the pages are in these two folders I am thinking of redirecting the plash page to the index page of one of the languages.

How does Google and other serch engines view this practice?

If it is ok to do, what is the best type of redirect to do? 301?

    Thanks for any help,
    Mark

Do a 301 redirect and you should be fine.
