    <?=$php_self?>

    Is this correct syntax with the '=' sign. As it works and prints the files directory on the page.

    in this format.

    /forum/tables/topics.php3

    You mean as a form action ?
    I think you also need to echo it.

    Yes that is correct syntax alright. = is a shorthand for the echo command. Full documentation can be found here: http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.echo.php
