    Weekly Photo Challenge - Light

Alright everyone, like "signs", this is a theme that can be abstract or concrete. Get your camera out and show us how you see "light"!

When I have to work with meanings of themes, like light, I always go into the Thesaurus to find the different versions of what the word means. It is very helpful to get the ideas moving into other directions from the first that springs to mind. Here are a few examples of synonyms:

shiny, unclouded, brilliant, ablaze, aglow, luminous, glossy, radiant …

Understanding it's synonyms is also helpful...so technically, anything that's not "dark". :P

I know what I'd like to take a shot of, but I've no idea where a location to actually shoot it would be.

In the meantime, here's some light play on a leaf:
They say, "Practice makes perfect," yet they also say, "Nobody's perfect". I don't get it.

The concept light can be stretched into many directions. First I have a cute house here where the sun highlights the collection of things. The sign on the side says: Sun + Sand.

    -

This one is the symbol of light of course, a tiny clay sun hanging on my front door.

I love the way dappled light plays on the tiles and leaves in my garden. The sun and shadow create a pattern on the symbols of light sources and reflected light sources. Sun, Stars, Moon.

Very nice pictures; I like the composition of the last one ("dappled" is the term for that?), and the holiday scene looks nice, what I like about it is the amount of luminosity from the light sources. Was it a timed exposure or did you open the aperture (I think I asked that correctly, I haven't messed with aperture settings yet)?

I'd like to get a shot of sunbeams shooting through some outdoor stone monolith's in a state park right nearby me. Unfortunately I can't forecast when we'll have enough morning mist to cause such an effect, I think the trees would block the light, and I'd have to wake up (really) early. I could hike up one of the Adirondack mountains and get a shot of dusk or dawn, but the black flies, mosquitoes and timing are all difficult! I think I'm going to have to think outside the box this week as I'm just not enthusiastic enough to get the shots I want. :P

Thank you -- as I recall the holiday decoration was timed, held in a steady hand, not tripod. Was too long ago to remember. What I like is the eerie quality the tree branches give to the feel, those branches create a room.

Dappled is just the term for spotty light, used in painting as well: dappled paint. Applied in blotches.

This is a photo (this is straight out of the camera, no editing except resizing and adding the frame) that I took late summer 2005.

    I always really liked it.

Here are a couple pictures I took last month when I went to Salzburg. I hope to get out this week and take some more.

The first is a photo of the fortress in the city. I liked how just the fortress had the sun on it.

and the next is the sunset from the top of the fortress.

There are some fine pictures here in this thread, delicious. Here are some more of mine:
the first is just plain tissue paper in front of a window, the second is a crinkled silk close to a window.

It was a marriage of Nikon and Canon... I was out shooting with my best friend (who's a photographer by trade), and he was swapping lenses and asked me to hold one of his... I was just fooling around and held it up to my lens and snapped some shots. I was surprised when that came back.

So it was shot through two lenses at once -- one nikon, and one canon -- sort of at the sun through some trees. What came out of it was rather abstract and pretty neat.

That is awesome. And that is also how one discovers some new thing by accident. Really great.

What a gorgeous texture in that photo, Datura. If you hadn't already said, I might have guessed it was a reflection on water!

    Light! Let there be light!

I did another one yesterday afternoon. I held one of those cheap plastic lens magnifying glasses in front of the lens (inspired by Josh), this is what happened pointing at the sun and clouds:
