What is the best way to develop php and ruby on one machine?

This is a long story so I will make it quick. I had Instant Rails running on my machine. I needed to get a phpbb forum up and running. I have never developed in php so I downloaded xampp to get my forum up and running. Well, that broke Instant Rails. I then realized that Instant Rails comes with php. I got rid of everything and re-installed IR. Now my rails apps work again but I can't seem to get my php apps to see the mySQL that is clearly running. When I try to install phpbb and it checks for the for all its requirements it says there is no mySQL.

So my question is; can you have php apps run from within Instant Rails? If not what is the best way to get both to work on the same machine?

To be honest, I'd take it out of the control of Instant Rails and xampp and install the individual pieces yourself. That way you have full control over your development environment.

Can I still have it use the apache server with IR or do I have to have two apache servers installed. If so how?

You only need one Apache server instance. Use Mongrel to pass the files to Apache. Have a look at this guide.

matches, I have had similar problems, but it was the other way around - IR broke XAMPP. Got rid of XAMPP, IR works fine with PHP, and it surely supports MySQL as far as I can tell.
