I don't know... maybe both. He's virtually an Internet celebrity in some ways. It's amazing that he does so well with his blog. Congrats to him for that. I visit his site a few times monthly to catch up on what he has recently blogged about.

There are so many ads on his blog it about crashes me browser.

Of course, this business model isn't unknown. Pretend to make alot of money, get popular because people think you're rich and want to emulate you, start making actual money based on your manufacturered reputation.

Not saying he is actually doing that, but I tend to question anyone who stamps their income to their forehead so prominently.

I also have an inherent dislike for people who purposefully do not differentiate between net and gross. For instance many PPC marketers do that, listing their gross revenue, because its a big number, instead of the much smaller net profit.

Not saying John Chow does any of this perse, don't know, don't care. But you realize of course that if a lot of these people came up to you on the street with a line like "Hi, I'm rich, I make a lot of money, buy this book I wrote and you can too." You'd probably walk a little quicker to get away from them. For whatever reason people who can easily recognize shill when its peddled on late night informercials will fall for what someone says in a blog.

Thanks for the link. Very inspiring. Besides that, I don't have anything intelligent to say since I haven't heard about the guy before. I do however find this phenomenon interesting. I read the post you were linking to where he gives a break down of the October revenue of $23K. It says $11.9 comes from private ad sales. So whether anyone things the guy is a "fraud" or not, that $12K is from his own merits and not accidental Google clicks, right?

If it is too good to be true...

I've noticed over the last 2 years an explosion on "secrets of buying homes" for cheap. It all started with the No Money Down infomercial years back. Site reminds me of that.

I just found his site today (and a few others like it).

On one side I envy his ability to market himself and his content to make the amount of money he does from it, on the other, I dislike blogging for money's sake only...but I feel I may be in the minority...

I used to read his blog everyday, but I got tired of all the "where I ate dinner" and "what my favorite fast car is" posts.. I also grew tired of the over-stuffing of advertisements and affiliate links in my face every time i go to his blog..
Mr. C has already made a lot of money in his 'day job' - if he was truly blogging only to help/teach others, I dont think he would have all that advertising..

Well we have to admit, John Chow is something.
He did what others tried and now he can afford to post pictures of ... what he had for dessert and billboards of his favorite restaurant!

I believe that if he continues like that he will eventually loose a lot of his fame.

He already lost some PR during Google's latest "restructuring". I think he's a PR4 now.

then again, like aspen said, ... "don't know, don't care".

There are ways to make money online without blogging and without TLAs, but then again, that's just me.

Yeah, I was about to say, PR doesn't mean Jack.

There are plenty of sites out there with 0 PR, and they get hundreds of thousands of hits via advertising and word of mouth.

I read his blog now and then, He built it up to around 180,000 monthly hits. He hyped it up quite a bit, and because of that he can sell space for a lot of money, which is over half of that October income.

Looking at it from that point of view, is it really that big of a deal? You just have to get out there and pound the Internet pavement looking for advertisers.

Sometimes i wonder if people who have those blogs really do tell the truth on how to make money or do they steer away the competition by telling false tactics?

So this means one of two things. Either Kontera uses his site to advertise their service in which case they could just as well have him put up banners. OR he could probably earn more from Kontera if he ran their regular aff code on his site and got paid on performance.

But this way, he is garunteed $1k per month, i'd personally rather have $1000 garunteed rather than the possibility of it earning more.
