Do you join a lot of forums just to meet new people - or do you join them just because you feel like it?
Let's discuss being a forum junkie
I don't join forums often. And even if I do, chances are I'm not gonna stick around. I only tripped once and now paying the price.
I've joined a few, more so now that I'm learning web design - but really I join to learn or read stuff I need to know. This is the only forum that I've stuck to thus far, and I think it is because it was a valuable resource with many helpful and knowledgeable people around - certainly helped with my learning curve.
Most forums I've joined have colapsed a year or two after I joined.
I'm new (joined today) - main reason for joining is that I found that I'm getting behind regards knowing 'webmastery things'. Thing is I only work with IIS and I see that a lot of post are php - looking on the plus side, I might feel more confortable about php sson!
I'm a member of three forums that I've ever posted in regularly. I'm probably a member of 20 or so in total, the other 17 places that I've signed up to simply because I needed help with something or because I couldn't get the answer I wanted without registering.
My cumulative postcount in these three forums is about 15,000, which must pale in comparison to people like Vinnie and stymiee! This is the only forum I visit very regularly though, the other two I visit maybe once a week or less frequently.
I should really spend less time here.
Not a junkie, but I do cruise the neighborhood, note the key players and turn my collar up for a Q + A / response / occassional hit...
Sitepoint beats any I've encountered in the past 4-5 years because it's diverse, has great mods and admins and is totally powered by excellent users!
[Never boring; usually just what you were looking for - or hadn't expected to find.]

sig space open...
I used to be a heavy forum/irc junkie about 6 or 7 years ago. Then I kind of got bored with the scene I was hanging around as the community started to disintegrate. I started foruming regularly again last year, mainly only to one gaming forum. I joined here a while ago but started posting regularly in the last month or two.
Forum/IRC junkie is a really dangerous thing to be....
I met my wife on a forum, so I guess they've been good to me.
I "own" 2 forums, and post on about half a dozen more, so I'm a lightweight by some of the standards above. But there are good forums and bad forums, and sometimes I think some people use forums as an excuse to act like jerks because they're not face-to-face with the other forum members.
But when you have civilized people on a forum, they can be great.
