I'm installing APC on a CentOS 4 machine, and I can't for the life of me get the install to work. Here's my steps:

cd /root/php-5.2.1/ext
pecl download APC
untar, gunzip, rename to apc
cd apc
cd ../..
rm configure
./buildconf --force
./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs --enable-apc --enable-apc-mmap --with-php-config=/usr/local/bin/php-config
make install

Then comes the edit of the php.ini file:
extension = "apc.so"
apc.enabled = 1
apc.shm_size = 64
apc.stat = 0

followed by an httpd restart.

Problem is, there is no apc.so. It should be located in /usr/local/lib/php/extensions/, but is nowhere to be found (already searched whole filesystem).

I'm currently running PHP 5.2.1, and the version of APC returned by the PECL downloader is 3.0.15.

Anyone else seen this before, or see what I'm missing?
