    Hello all,

Does anyone know of a good ruby based forum app that I can plug in to my site?

    Thanks,

Beast is a pretty good bit of software:

Although unless things have changed in the last half-year or so, it's not quite as easy to just "plug in" to your site. Integration will differ from site to site depending on what you need.

    Nope, haven't used it personally.

I know 37signals migrated to Beast awhile ago...

    Google to the rescue.

I knew a few, but none in English, strangely enough.

We've tied beast in tightly with our CRM / CMS system in Ruby called XLsuite.

check out the source code here: http://xlsuite.org

or simply point to any subdomain of xlsuite.com - like: http://sitepoint.xlsuite.com

claim that subdomain and you'll have the latest version running hosted, it's still free while we're in beta.

Some sites running on it include :
    http://liveinmountpleasant.com
    http://rickstonehouse.com
    http://sellfm.com

Give it a whirl, you'll like it.

    Integrating Beast

With apps such as Beast, I think you're better off not trying to integrate it with your application, but instead run it as a separate application that acts like part of your app.

I haven't done this with Beast yet, but I do this with Mephisto, the blog engine from the same author (Rick Olsen), and this is the approach he recommends. It keeps your app focused, makes it easy to upgrade, and isolates any issues.

It just requires a little duplication of layout code and css in the two apps to make them look like they're part of the same app.

The usual approach to addressing the app is with a subdomain. So you'd point www.mysite.com to your main app, and something like forum.mysite.com to Beast, and if you want a blog too, blog.mysite.com to Mephisto (or any other blog engine).
