get an outside file's bitsize inside flash?

hey there. i'm trying get see if i can find out the size of an outside file (a txt file in this case) by using actionscript.

i know i could use PHP to do this and just loadvariables from the php file, but is there a way to just bypass PHP in this case and just use actionscript?

    thanks

As far as I know. it's as you suggest there's no way of doing this. The flash 5 plug-in can only analyse the size of files which use the Plug-in (i.e other movies or movie clips) so I think PHP (or another server-side script) may be the best (or only) way.

Indeed, to the best of my knowledge this is right. It's easy to detect the size of a loading swf file (eg, onto another layer), but I am not aware of a way to detect the file size/loading status of any other kind of file purely within Flash. May indeed be time to brush off those PHP scripts!!
