How effective are they?

Well, if you use some kind of advertising in your site to show visitors, doing it on the feed would do the same for subscribers, once they don't always go to the site and just read the feed.

Of course, one need to have in mind that a feed is pretty much linear and you have very little control of display, so ads in feeds should be more discreet
