    Question Does Buying Traffic Work?

    Hi,
I have some scripts I want to sell.
I was thinking of simply buying traffic to my site. Does this actually work?
Has anyone here ever used any such service?
I mean buying say 5,000 visitors for x dollars.

Buying traffic can mean a lot. I suggest you use targeted adervertising such as google adwords. Its fairly cheap for most keywords and has been very effective for me in the past.

    It's a simple calculation.

Estimate what percentage of your visitors buys an item. Thus, estimate profit per visitor. If that value is more than what you would pay per visitor to come to your site - by all means, do buy.

By buying traffic I mean paying a site so that they send 5,000 unique visitors (say, Webmasters) to my site.

My question was whether these services are actually genuine and known to work.

How can you tell whether the unique visitors they send will be webmasters that are interested in your scripts? four out of five thousand could be domain owners who use front page.

IMO, such offers prey on the consumer's naivety. They try to make you believe that they have a pool of waiting web surfers just itching to get to your site. If your site is well optimized, getting good serps, and you still aren't getting the traffic, buying traffic isn't going to get you relevant traffic.

On looking at these sites, all they are is advertising gimmicks. One of them even offered AdWords - something which you can easily set up for yourself at much less expense. Another (the number two for "buy traffic" in Google) didn't know how to design a decent website. I'm pretty pessimistic as to whether or not he knows how to get traffic to one... at least traffic that converts.

I had good success buying traffic from StumbleUpon. Last I checked it was only 5 cents per user to your page. The cool thing is that if you send the users to a good landing page - usually not your homepage - that the stumbler likes and gives a thumbs up to, you can get hundreds, sometimes thousands of visitors that you didn't pay for. For example, you might pay $10 for 200 visits, but actually get 1000 visitors.

It's usually crappy, I bought some and got nothing from it. Typically its a bunch of untargetted traffic in some popup that doesn't care about your site just wants to close it. the stumble one sounds interesting though

Yes, indeed. There are some rather "seedy" operations that promise traffic. There may be a diamond in the rough somewhere, but overall, I would expect this is not the best thing to do with your money.
