Eh, it's not even worth aspiring too when you're already at these traffic levels. Such a tiny percentage of traffic from a D*gg front page story looks beyond the linked page or ever returns that it's not worth the trouble. I've been there half a dozen times and tracked the visitors carefully.

Ah, Missed this one. So call the reference site a library, and "some of the best minds in the business" call researchers, who never stop researching and will never stop aggregating materials. And hopefully, answering questions. Tell me the difference between what SP are doing and a University does?
The only difference is whether SP wants to take money from a research council or an advertiser for accelerating (enlarging) what it is doing. Throw in a few conferences (and/or courses, workshops), face to face or virtual, and it sounds like an education.

Agree.
Good and practical books with code that you can use directly on your own site.
In my view, XML driven sites will be more important in the future, so the XML family of technologies should get more attention. I have been surprised of how low activity there is in the XML forums.
XML with dynamic tags and one source many applications (singlesourcing) and XLink with semantic linking, is the future in my view. Own recommendations if you start on XML:
- If you are not in a hurry use XSL(T) in stead of CSS for styling from the beginning.
- Again if you are not in a hurry use XML Schema in stead of DTD or Relax NG from the beginning.
- Don't use namespaces unless you need namespaces.
- If you have to use name spaces don't use a default name space.
Competitor to Flash or more advanced?
There is an important concept in economics, comparative advantages. SitePoint has a comparative advantage on PHP in my personal view. May be the best web forum on PHP. I look forward to PHP 6.0 books from SitePoint and PHP 6.0 discussions around XML and PHP XML parsers etc.

Well said. The Sitepoint contests have been little more than a way for people to get ideas for free. You simply hold a contest, see what develops, and then rip off whatever you need without finishing the contest.
It's really a huge joke and has been for some time. It also goes a long way toward explaining the faltering quality of the designs being submitted.
The admins threatened to do something to improve the contests over a year ago but did very little. Maybe they thought raising the cost of holding a contest would be an improvement! LOL!

Actually Schwann, they rebuilt the contests area from the ground up. It's still in its testing phase (read: beta), but the new system does appear to be working far better than the current one.

Haha yes it is...
Speaking of Sitepoint I was just thinking when the next redesign would be when I saw this thread. It seems like Sitepoint just has too much content to drastically redesign anything but something like the forum menu is surely due perhaps latter in the year?

The forum memu was actually redesigned last year.

Steved,
I'm new here and it appears that Sitepoint is a great way for a company to gain exposure to new, talented people. Which, in turn is a great way for talented people to get hired, paid well and expand their portfolio. Unfortunately, it only works if the "creatives" respond to our communications (emails and direct messages). So, please be sure to check your messages and respond promptly. I've sent a few messages to people I want to hire (and pay properly) and have yet to receive a single answer. Not a one.

Best,
K

MCMKen, have you tried posting a listing in the Looking to Hire section of the Marketplace?
