i want every thread to devolve into either mac vs pc threads or your mom insult trading. that's all i want really

I am not sure you understood my point. Wat I meant is that Sitepoint may decide one has to pay a fee to become a member. Only then will he/she be able to see the great contents Sitepoint has to offer. Whether that happens or not depends on what the people who run this website decide.
Why do you say it is stupid? It is an opinion and I am entitled to hold it. We are all here to express an opinion. Are we not?
You could present a counter-argument if you like but calling someone's views stupid is hardly the way forward, to say the least

A new forum will be added "Other Other Topics"

It also wouldn't be in SitePoint's best interest to shoot itself in the foot, rip its own heart out during a sacrificial ritual and then spork its own eyeballs out in the name of making an extra buck - especially since the end result would be the end of SitePoint (and they know it).

Exactly.I think he meant that it would be a stupid thing to do... not that your opinion was stupid.![]()
I seriously doubt that anyone would make the decision down here to start charging members. They would have to get past me first! (ok, I'm not that tough)
One thing that we have been discussing is to start making more resources free, eg credits, reference sites as Mark mentioned. But we are still working out ways of implementing these ideas.
A social networking element to forum profiles is an idea that has been raised (by myself, actually) so members will be able to promote their own services etc.

"What, awesome? Yes."

The Idea Sharing from the First Page was already great. I hope that it is not too late to Share my humble idea from south-East Asia! . Would be great to have some of How To instruction for a newbie, So far I read alot of interesting great threads here making me more knowledge. Thanks
I am a fresher to this site .What is the advantage of this PHP.
I think the future of sitepoint is very good. Now only a few people come to know about it.It must increase.

You could ask in the PHP forum.

Forum memberships will never be charged. Charging for a forum blows.
I foresee more free quality content. I foresee permanent, free reference material of a higher quality than what is currently available elsewhere -- especially for beginners.
I also foresee Coffee over IP being banned by ISPs and goverments. (would that be powered by Java? oh man, such a bad joke)

Isn't the vBulletin team working on this?A social networking element to forum profiles is an idea that has been raised (by myself, actually) so members will be able to promote their own services etc.

perhaps Mr Gates does eh?? Now there's a scary thought!!

The web would be a terribly boring place without SitePoint.
I'd be stuck playing StarCraft all day, the only game with lasting entertainment of the past 10 years.
I must give credit to Realms of Despair, though. I got 7 years of enjoyment out of that game before the player base dropped too low (there's probably 300 "people" signed on at any given time now, but only a handful actually at the screen interacting).
Will SitePoint last as long as StarCraft? I hope so...![]()

Here is some stuff I would like to see...
1) Bring back the daily news wire!
2) Sponsor an open source project. Harness your developer community and build a repository of useful code snippets or perhaps a full stack framework.

1. Post blogs more frequently. These days I mostly visit SitePoint for the blogs, akin to visiting D1gg/Slashdot/Engadget for news. Blog posts aren't made very often on Sitepoint though. Obviously you want to focus on quality over quantity, but there is quality web development news posted everyday that SitePoint doesn't catch on to. More News wire especially!
2. Do something to get dugged. I haven't seen SitePoint on the front page of D1gg or Slashdot in ages.
3. Jump on the video sharing bandwagon? A la YouTube but more like, say, DevTube? A place for professionals and beginners to video talk about web development and what not.
You guys, I would so totally pay to be here.. in fact I do in a way by buying so many good books..![]()
HAWK, yes you love people like me cause we lurrve it here. I'm a sitepoint pimp and more. Down with the change haters! haha
Still I don't think we should make the social network think too much of a big deal, maybe one feature at a time, and then think seriously about it, I mean no blogs no photo galleries etc.. Something more in the way of a real profile would work perhaps. Don't go jumping on the titanic..
And Dan, YES if it wasn't for sitepoint I would be playing starcraft all day/night long, that and simcity 'cause I really suck at games
As for you Vinne, what yous sayin' 'bout ma mom?

Can the servers handle getting hit by d1gg?2. Do something to get dugged. I haven't seen SitePoint on the front page of D1gg or Slashdot in ages.
