I've just found out (by trawling through old posts) that you can put in a keyphrase metatag as well as a keyword metatag.

What's the difference and does using keyphrases as well as keywords 'dilute' their effectiveness?

I've always put phrases into my keywords, just separating with commas.

I'd be interested in this as well...I've got a few more meta tags on some of my sites than I actually understand...are the copyright and author tags really needed, or are they just so every single engine will have the info it might choose to display?

You can make a meta tag for your favorite icecream, it doesn't mean anything.

There are standards search engines look for, keywords and content. You can add meta tags for an internal search engine, you can put copyright and author tags on for recognition and legal issues (I personally do this). Its really up to you. No search engine is going to index a "generator" meta tag or an "author" meta tag. But they're there basically to give a little info to who is reading the source code.
