Does anyone know of a good law firm specializing in 'web business' in NJ? If there is no such 'specialization', what/who do you look for to get FACTS in regard to online business?

There are many attorneys and firms that handle various aspects of a web business but rarely do you see a firm specializing in the "web" versus "non-web". Instead you will find specialists dealing with specific aspects of internet businesses like domain name conflicts, service level agreements, copyrights & IP and so forth. There are also more general areas which impact the internet like general contracts, incorporation, taxes, etc...

What sort of issues are you looking for an attorney's advice on?

Remember, in law there is little fact in law and lots of interpretation.

Maybe to some, but in most legal disputes the facts are pretty clear, especially contract law and things that affect small businesses such as web developers. Unless you are dealing with some pretty new or complex issues, there is LOTS of clarity in the law and most 'interpretations' by courts will be similar. Small business law is fairly predictable.

Fair point... I suppose the attorney's I've just been "lucky" enough to work with attorneys who like to see things a little differently... on every issue. Or argue every point for no other apparent reason than because they can. Good for their billing, not for my timelines.

Any attorney can argue anything for the benefit of the client, but in the end the law is the law and the judges will interpret it the same way that it's always been interpreted (using previous cases) UNLESS you are seeking a precedent-setting judgment or bringing forth a case that questions the law itself. In small business, this is rarely the case.

I get annoyed when attorneys try too hard to bend the law in our direction - it's expensive and not always worth it. Rather, I prefer my attorney to simply advise us on how to apply tried-and-true law in our favor and stay on the 'happy path'.

I too have heard good things about Jeffery Cohen, and it was on another web forum. However I can't say that I've actually worked with him.
