Email to friend: are they used anymore?

When was the last time you've actually emailed a link or a page to someone through a "Email To Friend" form on a website? Is this promotion technique effective anymore with the exploitation of online forums & bookmarking services?

Take this forum as an example; although it's already an implemented option, I've never ever used it to inform someone about some topic. Instead, I would either tell him/her when we meet online (via IMs) or would simply send a PM with the link.

However, one may argue that "Email To Friend" forms could still be useful if they're designed to grab the user's attention & well-placed in the page, which makes it more of a usability issue than anything else.

For designers & developers do you still use (or recommend) this technique in your projects, even if clients don't ask for it?

I've never used a link like that myself, but I hear there's still use for 'em.
The mother of a friend of mine, for example, uses them all the time if she finds something she thinks is useful for him. Maybe it's something people who are less tech-savvy really appreciate, but people who have copied a URL and composed a new email in a jiffy have less interest in.

Personally I haven't used it in a loong time. Back then email wasn't as easily accessibly as it is now, so I guess more people used the tell-a-friend button for simplicity. Not so much nowadays.

That being said, I still put it in most of my projects just in case someone needs it. Any publicity is good.

I belive it's mostly used by the less tech-savvy. I've used it a couple of times myself when using a public computer or maybe a friends computer, to email something interesting to myself. I also receive it from time to time from some of my less tech-savvy friends.

I always use it on my site. I even have statistics for it on one of my sites:

Daily users in average this year: 1143
Times "send to friend" have been used daily: 12

So there you go My $0.5.

I don't send much, but I get a lot of emailed links from several contacts. Additionally, many blog social bookmarking widgets have an email link. Amazon.com also has a "Tell a friend" link so I think these links are probably quite popular.

What does 'tech savvy' have to do with a tell a friend or email this link?

Seems they're still in good use.

It's always nice to have some statistics. How do you count the usage of that? Through scripting or some traffic analysis tool?

I use google analytics to measure the site statistics.. and on the "tell a friend" tool I just have a really simple query that updates a database.. like:

    update tell-a-friend-counter set counter=+1 where='$currentdate'

    Nothing fancy, just really simple.

I usually interpret this to read, "Add someone you don't like to our spam list". Better yet, use google to find "Email a friend" and then add them to dozens of spam lists.

I don't like this at all, and don't think it is a very good practice. If I want to email a friend I will do it myself.

You've raised a good point, dvduval (<-- hard to remember nick! ).

This is obviously a site designer or developer issue to consider, as most regular users won't usually bother about it. However, CAPTCHAs & other anti-spam techniques can be used on these forms to reduce spam. I'm not fully aware of all the functionality available in phpLD, but from what you've said I suppose you didn''t implement a "Send Link To..." on it, right? Don't you think it would be of great use to add this feature to phpLD? I think it's particularly useful on a links directory.
