I would recommend picking moderators out of your current userbase versus new members. Existing members who have shown proven leadership abilities, maturity, and knowledge should be atop your list.

    Hey.

I look for leadership and people skills. Wanting to see a community succeed is a key element as well as someone that takes pride in what they do.

A moderator is an example, anyone that isn't willing to realize that and be a proper example shouldn't be a moderator.

    Thanks, everyone.

Does anyone have a formal procedure? Like you must be a member for x months, have x posts, be nominated, etc??

    its really up to you

a few of my super mods were there from the start so they were the obvious choice

i wouldnt make members mods just cos they post a lot though - you can see the type of members that will make good mods quite easily

for example, the member will calm things down in a heated discussion

I've always found it pretty easy to pick moderators - amount of time spent on the site is a factor, but mostly I look at who is already performing as a 'community leader' and helping to keep the community going forward in a positive manner. I don't think it's something to agonize over or create 'scientific' criteria for - just go with your gut!

How many of you have another site admin/webmaster??

    How did you pick them?

What control do you give them?

I have never picked another webmaster/site admin, I don't feel that its needed.

I've never worked with a second webmaster either, I think you can delegate tasks but keep central control.

If admin work does become too overwhelming for you (either because your site becomes very active, or you're too busy with other projects) then it would be advisable to obtain help. How to go about this is not something I have experience with, but obviously trust would be of paramount concern. You could either ask a friend or family member, or else go with a successful moderator. I would also advise giving them limited tasks at first and expand on their authorities as needed - this will avoid abuse and power-tripping and will make sure that the person is responsible.
