Thumbs down One Reason I Don't Like RoR!

    Hello everyone,
RoR is definitely one of the most powerful frameworks. And it does cut down the development time almost in half. But what really bothers me is, RoR seems only appealing to the developers but not the end users.

For example a client asked me to make a CMS for him and I did it in RoR within 6 hours. But the client informed me that he couldn't even install it. For example he didn't feel comfortable executing the scripts, and doesn't like using the command line as well.

Now, I did an exact replica in PHP (CakePHP) in about 7 hours and sent him the files. He installed it and is very happy with it.

So is there any way to develop RoR Products, so the user doesn't even need to use SSH?

I always install the app for them, either on my server or on theirs.

Yeah I don't really trust any client to install something I wrote, I'd rather do it myself.

I don't trust the developers to touch production servers.

Exactly my point! Also there is a massive amount of potential customers out there who doesn't have SSH Access. As a result they can't even run any products written in Ruby.

I hope in future there will be a way to execute the ruby scripts through the browser itself .

Sounds like you are talking about using Rails on hosts that don't support Rails. That would be like trying to install Wordpress on a server that didn't support PHP.

Many hosts support PHP and not Ruby or Rails, this is fact. If you are married to host that doesn't support Rails, sure, don't use Rails. Or get a plan at one of the many hosts that supports Rails. Whatever.

Exactly. If you are smart enough to "not trust developers to touch production servers", then it seems unthinkable that the same person is scared of SSH and / or can't figure out how to get a Rails app running.

If the client is going to be installing the application and administering it, perhaps it would be wise for them to request their application be built in a language they are familiar with.
