    Query on form change, how?

Ok this is what I am doing.

I have a text field and a bar code scanner, when a barcode is scanned or when 11 characters are typed I want it to go ahead and submit the form. Since I know an ok amount of php it'll then run a query to see if that inventory item exists and if it does it will then check that item in as being received. I know the form (HTML) code and PHP code needed. Just don't know how to do the auto form submit after 11 characters are present in the text field.
