Where a browser does allow such a script to run the script does not necessarily need to be triggered by the person pressing a button, it can run automatically when the page loads. That is why modern browsers block such scripts. They were mainly used by spam and porn sites to hijack peoples home page.

People on the web have already chosen what page they want as their home page. Most choose a major search engine such as Google or Yahoo because that makes it easiest for them to navigate to all the places that they want to go. To get people to make your site their home page simply set up your site as a search engine that works better than Google and people will make it their home page without needing a link to do it.
