How to make ratings just like on YouTube?

I wonder how can I make rating system just like on YouTube? I like their system, because it's very compact. Is there any open source script for that? If no, could you give me an idea how they did it?

I'm pretty sure that its not open source You can check hotscripts.com for different types of rating scripts using javascript. I find the PHP or Perl ones to be more powerful.
