    Talking Monster Fun

Since Halloween is right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to have a collection of strange creatures, ghosts, scary guys and what not by then. Let your imagination go free and create with whatever program you have a picture that fits into this theme.

Let's see what you've got. I am looking forward to some fun.

    Here is my first monster

I am about half way creating my monster. It's kind of like a tribal war mask monster but really that isn't going to help you much, I should try and get it finished.

Yes Andy, that would be nice I wanted to do a few more as well, but reality chopped that idea in half

I've been working on it tonight, it's coming along ok, but i'm having that darned problem of making it less 2D.

There is a simple way you can start to get dimension. Think of a light source. It shines onto the object. The side that gets hit by the light is bright, the side that does not is darker. It is much more complex than that of course, but it is a start. A good little project to study this on is to take a cylinder of some kind, light color (you can make one from a thick paper, not shiny), and observe what a strong light shining from one side does to it. You can also take a photo of it to analyze it. Then try to draw or paint that and see if you can not get the three dimensional effect.

Once you did that, you do the same with all possible shapes: balls, cubes, pyramids etc. All things we look at are just a combination of those basic shapes. Once you know what happens to those, you can illustrate anything you want, as complex as you want. You must only follow the rules of reality. All this can be very abstracted, but it must be within the realm of logic for it to be read right.

Go around and observe, look at a tree trunk in sunshine, simple manmade objects. Try to see and then duplicate.

Oh I would post it.. but it's very 2D. I've gone back to it a few occasions but believe it is flawed from the outset. Oh what the hell I may as well post it, here it is.

It wasn't what I envisaged, which was a tribal war mask with overt features.. and it's really terrible. I'm posting it only for posterity I've been going to some really interesting graphic forums lately to see the kind of work that can be done and I am toying with subcribing to a really good magazine which covers digital art.. I know I can do better than this but the experience is what counts and well thanks for posting this thread otherwise I would not have tried this Eternal positivism

Much too friendly for a monster, Hollywood smile

Yes it is flat, but that can be a style as well. You can work only flat and it can be great too. It is very much a silk screen style. Very appealing

First step in getting better is not to hesitate to show what you have done.
Second step is not making excuses.
Third step is just doing more and improving one little step at a time.
Fourth step is to repeat the first three steps over and over and over…

Ha ha. It does sound simple, does it not? And yet it is so very hard. I am still doing this as well, never finished, always adding. It is a fun life if do it like this. The monster of stagnation will never eat you if you push onward a little at a time

It may sound simple, yes, but I did not mean my words lightly, as ParkinT pointed out, those simple sentences hold meaning enough for a lifetimes work - of course. It is a truth that becomes a way of life. In reality, I don't think there is a 4 point plan, the 4 point plan is only the way pointing to the result

Thanks, indeed. Statements like this show my age. I have thought about it a lot

The four points are just a summation. Do not forget that there are many things that flow together that make one of those points.
