Fluid Background Images

I have ended up chewing on the rug to figure out how to do a fluid background like the ones on Blogger -

I started with laying out 3 columns with colored backgrounds which worked fine, but there must be a better way of accomplishing this with images without resorting to overly huge ones?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Please link to the Blogger site, and if possible to your own website, we now more or less have to guess what you actually want to do

As Ben said above we need more info to work with.

The blogger site doesn't seem to have a fluid background and just uses this image for the borders and main center column. Apart from that the rest is all straight forward coding and i can't see any fluid images or difficulties there.
