ok, so you can't do it in the traditional mask way. i see...





If I were you, I would create the mask in Photoshop, save the mask as a channel and export the image as a PNG. Then you'll have a 256 level transparency mask in Flash.

i got it to work, didn't realize you can't do it the regular "mask" way. basically does the same thing as the png you're talking about it. it's kind of clunky to do it this way - i wanted it to move, so you have to have this x-large symbol to block out everything... oh well, it works...
