I think you need to decide what type of person you are:

    1) One who will do anything for money

    2) One who will draw the line where their ethical and moral beliefs are concerned

    ~

Once you determine who you are you can either take the job, or determine where you draw the line and why... and then stand up for what you believe.

    Wink

What exactly is an 'Adult' web site? All of my web design clients tend to be adults? I've never been asked by a minor to build a web site?
Guess this is why business has been slow...

I think the question is just simply based on your own beliefs.

A few things to consider would be do i want recognition for the job? If you're worried about what people may think of you because you designed an adult site then you may not want to do it.

Also, what is your feeling on adult sites? If you are not offended by them, then go for it.

There is nothing unethical about Adult Sites done in the right context. If 2 (or more) people consent to something that is not illegal then it is up to them.

It all comes down to your own beliefs.

Your response is fair, but your analysis is sloppy.

You say that '"talking that the porn industry is unrelated to the exploitation is an ignorant point of view'".

    I agree with you.

However, the poster who originally introduced this concept into the thread said, "Though most people may not acknowledge it, this industry is responsible for a worldwide crisis of sexual lust (shown by the thousands more cases of sexual attacks than there were prior to the growth of this industry)."

This I cannot agree with, because it's simply not based in any [cited] sources or even a single fact. Unless he can prove it with some analysis or data, it's totally unfair to say that the porn industry is 'responsible' for a worldwide crisis - there are so many other factors and this statement is just simplistic. Furthermore, he provides no evidence that there are thousands more cases of sexual attacks than there were prior to the growth of the industry.

No facts, no analysis - just made up conclusions. Hence, nobody learns anything from this kind of statement except those who were already predisposed to concur with it.

It´s a well-known fact (at least in Denmark), that when porn was legalized many years ago, the rate of sexual attacks became much lower than before, I can find documentation of this, if anyone needs it.

In any case, I turned the offer down, it´s not a matter of ethics for me, just a matter of being comfortable with what you work with...

If your ok with the moral issue, then do it.

I checked on this before, and found that most companies buy their images from a company that specializes in these type of stock photos. These company charge $$$, but they guarantee that all the photos have model releases and the models are of age -- A lot of these companies will sell you the images, a cool site and provide the hosting -- something you might consider is going this route then re-selling to your client and/or charging extra to customize the site.

I will be writing a long, very long response to this thread later tonight.

I am sicken by some of what I read, I am buoyed by others.

For those who want a head start on my stand point then feel free to google me. It should turn up something interesting.

Ok... So I am calmer then I was and have decided to start writing now.

Hi, my name is Shelley and I assist independent companions and courtesans in their online marketing.

I do not take XXX sites and I do not allow "pink" in a public area of a site.

I have only put out one site I was not proud of in some way shape or form and that is purely because I didn't stand my grounds with regards to the design.

I also create non-adult sites on a regular basis. My goal is attractive, accessible, unique sites coded in HTML and CSS *with the occasional JS*.

I have turned down sites because they were beyond my comfort level. I started creating the sites because I feel that EVERY person or company has the right to a professional website created in a professional atmosphere unless they are using the site for deviance involving minors, animals, abuse, uncontrolled violence, etc.

I feel that what happens all too often to women who are Courtesans is wrong. "Web designers" and "Web developers" (I use these loosely) actually have the audacity to offer to "trade services", hold sites ransom for "services" or more money, distort photos and blackmail women to fix them or even blackmail them with face shots.

This is WRONG! I nearly lost my breakfast when I read the joke about trading services in the first two pages. Jokes aside... It is wrong. Nothing more nor less... This is despicable behaviour and if I save even one more woman from being abused in this way then I have done the right thing.

Has it cost me non-adult clients? Three.
Has it cost me jobs working for other companies? Two.
Have I declined clients due to content? Two.
Have I declined clients because they were abusive in nature (even though the person they abused was them self or tried to be abusive to me)? Three.

Do I stand by my decision to facilitate attractive, cleanly coded, 18+ websites to consenting adults? Yes I do.

I am tired of "keeping mum" about it on this forum so I won't. Very few are unaware that I do both genre. I didn't want it to influence anything I said or did here so I did not publicly broadcast it. Now I openly stand here and say it for what it is with pride.

The determining factor on site content:

My child is young... If it is just a beautifully made, classy site for a personal companion then I will gladly take it on. The most that would be seen are artsy nudes (which show nothing as it makes them little money to show more than a hint of what is there), or a lingerie or bikini shot.

My daughter walked in as I was resizing photos one day. The only thing she saw was a woman wearing more clothing then the women on the front page of Sports Illustrated!

The only thing she said was:

"Look mommy! A beautiful skinny ballerina!"

Funny isn't it? No prejudice, no knowledge, no issues.

Don't want to create something that your children would be shameful of? Don't create sites that contain content or images that would make it such.

    Now some direct responses:

Yes! Yes, I do see them all day on some days. Some are quite close to perfection too but I am blessed with having my own so maybe not such a big deal.

You think girls have brains? Can you please show a source to back that. Lol, I can't believe you tried one of those online dating services, what were you thinking. I don't know how you expect to meet guys (or at least decent ones) with an attitude like that. And most women's muscles are puny, unless your name is bertha or bubba I'm pretty sure any guy can beat you up.
I am a woman. Some might use the term girl in reference to me. I assure you that I have a brain. In fact this lowly little thing attached to my cerebral cortex happens to put me solidly into the top 1-2% of the worlds population. Pretty nifty for a "girl"!

I also have rather solid arm muscles - bench 120lbs. Lovely leg muscles - 200 reps at 250 lbs using a leg press at a 45 degree angle makes a good solid work out... Add in Adductor and Abductor machines at 120 lbs each +...

Just call me Bertha! All 5'10" of me baby!

Even though Im very open-minded, I just dont feel comfortable working on a site like that, even though shes beautiful. I have plenty of other offers in other areas, so no harm done. Maybe in the future I will change my mind, I really need work that I can use in my portfolio for everyone to see.
In the future I am going to say that I am more than willing to assist those looking for adult sites. Either in creating them myself or referring them to a designer who suits their wants and needs. I know many personally, and know of many more.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now back to our regularly scheduled childish behaviour. I am waiting to see how long it takes to be asked how big my "pecs" are.

    You are very welcome.

I just hope it helps anyone else with similar questions and that they make it to this post.

Just for the record. I split my portfolio into two sites. Hosted on different servers. That way the portfolio viewed is relevant to the client who sees it.

And that fun is what should come through in these sites for the adult market. The thrill of this dressing up, the whole playing and enjoying. It is not immoral at all, it is part of us. Some people just try to hide this from themselves. And if you go and approach a site like this with this kind of mindset, it will be a great site.

Fun, breezy, laughter and a little naughty.

    Absolutely!

These sites should also be a reflection and projection of the owners personality. They shouldn't be portraying something that isn't a part of the person. That is what makes them work. Reality is I have little say in a site other then to suggest 3-4 options for a look or feel after I ask many questions of a new client to find things out as well as see 5-10 photos.

Everything comes down to keeping it suited to the ultimate goal. Entertainment.

The phrase "illegal" comes up a lot when the adult arena is mentioned, and there are a few things that many don't consider. The first thing is to realise is that the *nasty* content is nothing to do with the adult industry proper - it's criminal gangs, the mafia and psychos who produce it, but the adult industry gets tarred with it's existance.

In all my dealings with adult companies in the UK, EU and US they work within the boundaries of the law of the country they publish from. If you think about it if they got busted they don't make money the business goes down, and all their staff lose their jobs. It's true some companies test the law out now and again but you can find this practiced in any business.
