My guess that the porn industry is not nearly as large a driver of exploitation as the human trafficking and prostitution industries. I hear constant stories of women being sold into prostitution and slavery, especially in Thailand where I spend a lot of time. However, the biggest producer of porn worldwide (by far) is the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, and that part of the industry is considered somewhat devoid of any critical slavery or exploitation issues.
This is not to say that the porn industry isn't historically associated with certain crimes and problems, but is it really fair to say that all porn drives exploitation and is therefore 'bad'?
It's such a complex issue that a generalization like that just doesn't really fly.
By that logic: the biggest driver of sex slavery is money, the biggest driver of violence against women is alcohol, and the biggest driver of rape is bad parenting. These observations may have some truth, but are they really absolute and comprehensive views?
Also along those lines, we could say that WITHOUT porn topics related to sex aren't discussed as much and thus fewer sex crimes are reported. Therefore, porn helps stop battery of women.
All of these points have been argued, and yet no clear correlation has been made. It goes on and on, with many perspectives. You are smart to believe in right and wrong and do your best to express that, but to invent facts and make such sweeping conclusions without any detail is pretty dangerous. The fewer our wants, the nearer we resemble the gods. — Socrates

Bah. to be honest if you feel its good money, go for it. You don't have to be a conisseur of the freakish arts to make some good money. and since you're not showing them in a portfolio, no worries. I'm Christian but I don't have issue with the porn industry. Its one of the reasons the web grew so fast and with such technological leaps. Judge not, lest ye be judged.

Datura, this is a case of.
Before the discussion even began, people were already decided and they'll make up as many facts as they need to in order to defend their decision.
I'm through with this thread. The original question was already answered and there'll be nothing else of value to come out of it.

Off Topic:
Way way of topic...

War has been the single greatest thing to promote technological advancement - So we all should be starting wars then?
If you have a moral or ethical stance on it then I would suggest following that and not wavering - Being true to yourself and having integrity in your business is of real significance.

I have asked myself this same question. Even that I know there is good money to be made, I haven't yet made an adult related site. Not that I have a problem with the content but because I am a parent and it just wouldn't work out. Not until they move out anyway(lol) So I think that it just comes down to individual circumstances and to each his/her own. There is a huge demand and someone has to pay the piper. So yeah I say go for it if you have the means/stomach.

I think it is a personal thing as already mentioned by someone else. But if i speak about myself then I will never make an adult website even if it is just hosting for so many reasons.

Interesting thread. Do you apply your same ethical sensibilities to other industries that you might find personally objectionable or exploitive, such as oil companies, multi-national corporations, the fast food industry, insurance companies, etc?

LMAO you get 'em
I wouldn't touch pharmacutical companies, lawyers, etc. LOL
Such sexual dysfunctionality. I personally can do without porn, but when it's classy & well done, it's okay. If you have to use it to be with your partner, then you need to do some rethinking about things.
It's a commonly known fact that North America has the highest rates of sexual assualts over other countries where porn & legalized escort agencies is an every day thing.
I remember once watching a show on this issues & the 15 y/o teen who spoke was soooo mature sexaully for his age believing & understanding about love & relationships, he could run circles around any man here in NA who's in his 30's/40's.
You guys can argue till you are blue in the face. Facts speak for themselves.
As Datura stated, the reason why people have sooo many sexual dysfunctionalities is b/c they live in a fishbowl wanting something they can't have.
They allow religion/guilt to run their life instead of being free to think for themselves.
It's amazing to me that so many years have passed now since people have become more free sexually & people still have HUGE issues around sex.
I personally find it disgusting how people treat each other online on dating sites trolling around like all women are a piece of meat (even women do it now), talking to us like they don't have a brain (they wouldn't dare talk this way in real life, they'd get beaten).
That disgusts me 10 X more than a porn site would & NO, I don't feel for one minute that porn has anything to do with this behaviour.
It's the person inside & their emotional issues, not the porn they may or may not see online that matters.
If a person is stupid enough to think porn is real life LOL, then they need to grow some brain cells.
Just happened across this thread when checking something else out.

This is just what I wanted to say. I read the whole thread to see if someone had beat me to it
For those here, who want to hang the starter of this thread and who believe that the porn industry should be banned altogether and who consider it responsible for sexual crimes, I highly recommend that you read this novel by Irving Wallace called 'The Seven Minutes'. It will give you some perspective. It is as relevant today as it was then, when published. Such novels should be made required reading in schools.Affiliate Mantra

IMO - these sites are actually very challenging and would be a great add-on for my portfolio. If given the chance and with a very nice offer I'd grab it.

I've been responsible for over 3 successful Adult-Orientated E-Commerce websites. While the content subject can be different from what most people are accustomed to, it is a website at the end of the day.
I suppose your question here is an ethical one. Should I, or Shouldn't I?
The Adult industry is an Industry NOT a sub-branch of crack-whore porn dealers that the 'doom-sayers' like to describe. People do buy dildos and the like, people do want professional websites that depict TV adverts at 1am.
While most people would suggest that you do not include it into your portfolio, I beg to differ. Shown here:[Mods, considering that this is on-topic]cs-developer.com/portfolio[/Mod] as you'll notice I've got both Sex-Centre and Dildoman listed.
Most people are surprised to see someone so opened-minded.
It actually improves the customer-trust while allowing additional revenue streams.
A classic example of what other businesses will do to discredit other webmasters. "Business: Ohh.. Yeah that guy is involved in the porn industry, better not use his services!" Customer: It's already listed as a portfolio piece, he made a sexshop online.. Who cares?"
People usually open-up on the sex-subject and trust develops from that point.
But at the end of the day you've a simple decision.
Do it OR refer to someone else.
