    CSS Layout- Page and Div Height Problems

    I used to code my layouts with tables, but recently I've tried to switch over to doing all of the layout in CSS. It's been going alright up until now, and my current project is about .01% from driving me back to tables... and probably mad at the same time. So any insight you guys can give me would be great!

    I have a center div (we'll call it div #1) that I need to stretch with the content to reach the bottom of the screen. I have my body tag set to height: 100%, and then the div's under that set to that as well, however it's not working. It only goes down the width of the current browser window (sometimes a little further), so if a user needs to scroll, div #1 won't show up past the scroll. I have an inside div that contains the content and it extends well past the end of the div #1, so what I need to know is how to get div #1 to fully contain div #2 and not let div# 2 extend past it.

    I can set the height on some pages so it's not an issue, but on pages that will have dynamic content, the height will forever be changing. I currently have about 5 different header files to accommodate different sizes and I know that is just beyond crazy, so if you could help me figure this out that would be great!

    Here's an example: http://www.gossipgirlonline.com/goss...rticles&page=1

    Notice how the first main table ends a little past the scroll. Any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thank you!
    Emma

    Have you tried removing the style for the height for those divs? What I mean is, don't specify any height for the divs you want to stretch, since the content divs seem nested in there, the outer div should stretch automatically if you don't specify a height. The absolute positioning will also cause problems like this. I have to admit, your issue here is one I've run into before so I was interested in this post. I tried a few things, and this seems to work pretty well for me in both ie 6 and ff 2, let me know if it works for you, I'm curious, I don't think it's perfect, but I hope it helps.

    Code CSS:
    body {
    background-image: url(../images/ggbk.gif);
    background-repeat: repeat-x;
    background-color: #82a2c7;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 0px;
    font-family: verdana, geneva, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
    font-size: 11px;
    color: #000000;

    }

    A.menu {
    display: block;
    width: 163px;
    text-decoration: none;
    font-family: verdana, geneva, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
    font-size: 11px;
    color: #6CC3E9;
    background-color: #ffffff;
    border-bottom: solid 1px #6CC3E9;
    padding: 1px;
    }
    A.menu:link {

    <div class="articleshortauthor">Sep 02, 2007 - 3:40PM by Emma</div>
    <div class="articleshorttext">A new television show is about to give New York City private schools the kind of attention students, parents, and administrators say they despise.
    <br /><br />

    Among the scenes in the pilot episode of "Gossip Girl," a series about life at single-sex Upper East Side private schools: A girl in a tiny dress twirls atop a bar, creating a Marilyn Monroe effect that delights a boy seated below her; the same girl, one year later, swirls martinis at a hotel lounge on a school night, solo and sorry for herself; two boys smoke marijuana in Central Park, debating the burdensome expectations their affluence brings; one of those boys sexually assaults first one girl, then another, both made vulnerable by a few too many glasses of Champagne. Sexy variations on schoolgirl (and boy) uniforms are rampant, but in none of the scenes do the students actually spend time in class.
    <br /><br />
    Based on a book series that has topped best-seller lists several times, selling 4.5 million copies, the television premiere of "Gossip Girl" is reigniting a debate over how accurately the series depicts life on the Upper East Side.<p><a href="gossipgirl_newsfeed.php?view=article&amp;article=25&amp;returnview=articles&amp;returnpage=1">Read more</a></p></div>

    <div class="articleshorttext">Josh Schwartz left the sunny beaches of O.C. to bring his brand of teen drama to the gritty city. His new show, Gossip Girl, will premiere on the CW September 19th, and it's been filming all over town lately.
    <br /><br />

    The series, which was gabbed about in The Observer recently, is based on the young-adult books of the same name and puts the spotlight on "the struggle for social supremacy among teens from both sides of the tracks in a posh Manhattan prep school." Think Ryan "Chino" Atwood meets Orange County, or Rory Gilmore goes to Chilton.
    <br /><br />
    The NY Post gets the straight talk from producer Amy Kaufman who said "New York City is a character in the story, it's not just a setting. It figures into the energy of the show and the way the story unfolds. We want to see our characters living and breathing inside of these environments - they are who they are because they grew up here."<p><a href="gossipgirl_newsfeed.php?view=article&amp;article=24&amp;returnview=articles&amp;returnpage=1">Read more</a></p></div>

    <div class="articleshorttext">To launch their fall lineups, the major networks are turning to the Web like never before, offering viewers the chance to see premiere episodes for free and producing original content around their new series that doubles as entertainment and advertising.
    <br /><br />

    All the networks except ABC are putting out at least some of the pilot episodes of their upcoming series on the Web and off, while ABC is limiting sampling opportunities to large screening events.
    <br /><br />
    The free sampling strategy clearly is on the rise this year following major successes during the past few years.
    <br /><br />
    The CW network is orchestrating "Gossip Girl" viewing parties at 20 sororities around the county.
    <br /><br />
    In addition to free previews, another recently introduced strategy for marketing TV series is on the rise this year. The networks are relying more heavily than ever on creating all sorts of original content around their series and distributing it as widely as possible on the Web.<p><a href="gossipgirl_newsfeed.php?view=article&amp;article=23&amp;returnview=articles&amp;returnpage=1">Read more</a></p></div>

    <div class="articleshorttext">Revolving around a group of privileged teens who inhabit Manhattan's Upper East Side, the new CW Network series "Gossip Girl" is poised to become TV's next important outlet for artists who want their music heard.
    <br /><br />
    Based on Cecily von Ziegesar's popular young-adult novel series of the same name, "Gossip Girl" arrives Sept. 19 by way of "The OC" creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. The show is a product of teen marketing agency Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Paramount Television.
    <br /><br />
    Chop Shop Music owner Alexandra Patsavas, who was the music supervisor for "The OC" and currently does the same for "Grey's Anatomy" and other shows, will apply her deft music skills.
    <br /><br />
    As with "The OC" and "Grey's Anatomy," and other shows on the CW, music will feature heavily into the lives and plot lines of the main characters. For instance, promo spots for "Gossip Girl"-viewable on the CW and the Internet-feature Fergie's "Glamorous" and Aqualung's "Something to Believe In."<p><a href="gossipgirl_newsfeed.php?view=article&amp;article=22&amp;returnview=articles&amp;returnpage=1">Read more</a></p></div>

    <div class="articleshorttext">Good news travels fast, or in the case of the CW, gossip does.
    <br /><br />
    The CW will premiere its teen soap "Gossip Girl" on Wednesday, Sept. 19, one week earlier than scheduled, the network confirmed Monday (Aug. 6).
    <br /><br />
    Thus, the show based on the popular series of books revolving around privileged private school teens will make its debut at 9 p.m. ET/PT, receiving an audience boost after the two-hour premiere of the latest season of "America's Next Top Model."
    <br /><br />
    Moving the premiere a week earlier also means "Gossip Girl" won't have to debut opposite the premieres of two of fall's most promising shows, NBC's "Bionic Woman" and ABC's "Private Practice." The move also demonstrates a vote of confidence from the CW since the buzz from the pilot has been good.<p><a href="gossipgirl_newsfeed.php?view=article&amp;article=21&amp;returnview=articles&amp;returnpage=1">Read more</a></p></div>
