Heroes - How do they do this?

Does anyone know how they achieve the dynamic resizing of pop up images effect that can be found on the heroes website?

Also the fading black background...?

The 'popup image'-thing is called Lightbox
The script uses an overlay element with a black background and adjusting the opacity of the element on a set interval.
