I'm looking for a relatively cheap, maybe even free bb but can't seem to find any other than the matts script archive one, which I find disorganised and hard to follow. Is there anywhere where I could get an advertisre free, cut'n'paste type BB?
How about UltraBoard. They have one that was distributed for free, but then they came out with UltraBoard2000 and now the charge $$$ for it, but I don't know how much. If you go to ultraboard.org (I think) and lurk around their forum you might be able to find someone that will give you a copy of 1.6.2 for nothing.
UltraBoard puts much more strain on the server because instead of creating normal .html pages, it reads it directly from a text file which takes much more time.
Also UB is going to die. The board owners (most of them) hate UltraScripts, the 'employees' are mad at the users, the board has very bad English, and I along with many other people don't quite trust them.
I haven't really had too much trouble with that script, but it's interesting to hear your views d3v.
By the way, since I do use that script, I do have a zipped copy on hand, email me if you want it. I just didn't want to come right out and offer it here, but since Wayne did, I guess it's o.k.
Out of all the forums I've seen in actual use, vBulletin and Phorum have to be the best...and I'd give the nod to vBulletin...let's face it, a forum written in PHP is just bound to be superior...I'm amazed that UBB is still so widely used...I think vBulletin will be a major competitor in a year (maybe less).

I have the ZIP file for UltraBoard 1.62, 1.62.5, and UB2000. If any of you want it just ask me at abahta@activewm.com and I will be glad to send it to you.

EDIT: I am really tired of sending out the zip files. I have been getting at least 2-3 requests PER DAY to send the files. I will no longer send out either of them.
You can also look at ASPIN.com for others. The two listed above look and feel like UBB and are database driven. Snitz Forums is available now and free. Cool Message Board should be available soon.

Is there any discussion board that
can run under Window 98 or NT ? Most of
the board mentions run under Linux only. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> http://www.asp-dev.com looks pretty good to me...as is the custom of basically all new forums created from this point forward, this script has a UBB-feeling to it...but it's (of course), written in ASP.

My bulletin board was free. All you need is CGI access (you don't even need to know CGI scripting) All you do is upload the files to the right directories using your FTP program and VOILA!
See mine... http://www.AffiliateBlunders.com/discuss
Took me about 15 minutes to create and I know NO programming.
My BB/forum was free. I used Everyone.Net
What amazed me was all that it offered and how easy it is to use and setup. They even have stats on traffic, browsers, and other info.
I have to say that UltraBoard is the best or was when it was free! It still has to be up there with the best now as they have just released a new version which uses mySQL so it should be a lot faster and it's only $40!! http://www.homepagetools.com hosts UltraBoard for free and you can get your own fully customised copy there. Saves you having to install it yourself.
So...that's where BigTalker went. I was very interested in that script and all the controversy surrounding it...and then it just seemed to dissapear...had no idea it had just changed names...
Think of UltraBoard as UBB's younger, more obnoxious little brother.
I've heard great things about BoardPower and how easy it is to setup...so I don't think you could go wrong with that.
I would recommend against using "Discuss"...the use of frames is a negative, and it's basic interface leaves something to be desired...it doesn't look or feel like a forum to me at all...
Board Power is a good script. But I wouldn't bracket in the same league as vBulletin. I have heard a lot of shady things about the development and developer/s of Board Power (formerly BigTalker). I have used the script but I have found that it is very week in admin options. Some of the coding is suspect and so is security.
I would recommend it to people who cannot afford vBulletin. But anyone who wants to run a reasonably highly visited board should go with vBulletin. I think that a mysql version of BP is in the works so maybe that will be good.
