Promotion Ideas...good? bad?

I have a design service that i'd like others to know about. are these some good ideas to promote my business locally?

1. put flyers into mailboxes
2. e-mail school teachers/officals
3. submit ads in to local papers
4. post flyers on light posts

also how do i contact a business that doesn't have a website (properly)? do i go up to a manager? call a 1-800 #?

i guess my question is how can i best advertise locally?

If you're going to distribute offline promotional tools (flyers, etc) you might want to get some postcards printed professionally from Printing.com (WbCards.com now?). They had them at 500 for $70 or something like that, postcards featuring your website.

#1 is Illegal in the United States. Only registered postal workers are allowed to place things in a mailbox.

#2 is unethical and smacks of spam.

#3 is perfectly viable.

#4 can be illegal in certain jurisdictions.
