    Hello,
I am planning to start a promo campaign to gain more visitors to my site (currently about 50.000 visitors a month) and if possible more members for my paid membership section (nothing adult, just martial arts ;-)
I was wondering which was the best buy :
    - keyword ad on Yahoo
    - a text links with Sprinks (about.com)
    - a positioning with Goto.com
    - Ad campaign with banners like "bPath" (formerly hyperbanner.com)
    - buying ad space in printed related Mag

    Any help welcomed.

I'm not exactly sure which one would be the best, however, your best bet might be the text link on about.com

The reason I say this is that people are a lot more likely to look at text links than banner advertisements. People have come to realize that banners almost never have information that they might want.

Your next best bet is probably a keyword on yahoo. Although you may be thinking of banner advertising, keyword targeted ads will bring you some hits because your audience is most likely searching for information relevant to what you offer.

    Just my 2 cents

    Thanks for your reply Person.
the point is, I am already very well placed in my category on about.com (got the top 2 links in Kungfu/General). So I am afraid that a text ad in the bottom of the page will be waste of money.
    Any other idea ?

ps : nice site person, as soon as your site get approved, I will give you my comments on the design ;-)

I've been looking your site over again and thought about it a little more. Your subject matter is so highly specialized that a related magazine or publication just might gain some extra traffic for you.

Maybe not just advertisements too. If you could find a martial arts magazine willing to run a feature or even just a little info box about your website, you may get some extra hits.

This brings about a question however. I wonder how you could possibly monitor your success/failure in offline advertising attempts.

    Hmmmph...

Goto.com is always very effective. Don't bid on keywords like Kung-fu or martial arts, but rather your specialties. Other than that, Sprinks would be inneffective if you already have such a good targeted position. Other than that also consider Ezine advertising, it is usually very effective.

Which are good you ask? All of the above. I have personally had good results with goto.com, yahoo.com, and have heard good things about sprinks.com. Also, Bpath is one of our website's partners so I should know that they are a pretty good exchange as well.

About how to track offline ad results :
Maybe the easiest would be to give a gateway url in the ad like http://www.spheral.com/alma/?magazine-name-here
That would appear in the stats as a specific link.

    Back to the topic ;-)

I am glad that you talk about Bpath (formerly hyperbanner).
I run 2 banners on their Martial Arts site, my first ad got a ratio of 1.28% and the other one a ratio of 1.81%.
I have about 3500 impressions per week (means I generate the double ;-) )
I was also thinking buying extra impression but wonder if that will really increase my visibility and traffic.
I think I will give a try with goto.com but when I tried to register the script got an error (with the field : which state) and so far no one answer my email (been 4 days now).
    Any other suggestions ?

Here are recommendations from my own personal experience:

    1. Goto.com listings are not worth the money. I ended up spending more than I earned, unless you have a product that sells well and you can get enough people to buy it.

    2. Text links are much better than banners anywhere. Use it.

    3. Try advertising in e-mail publications related to your site. They are targeted, opt-in, usually have good response, and are very cheap.
