I'm researching ways to promote our newly
designed gift and reminder service online.
Search engines sometimes offer the feature
of 'pay per click' or 'pay per impression'
and I was wondering which was the most
effective -- both cost-wise as well as
    end results?

I personally prefer pay-per-click. You can be assured that people are going to come to your site for the advertising money you spend. And when people don't click on your link, you're essentially getting free impressions.

In particular, I have found that http://www.goto.com and http://www.sprinks.com have the potential to bring in a good amount of traffic. I usually pay anywhere from $.01 to $.30 per click.

    Take Care,

    Adam

Pay-Per-Click is the best way to go, there is no use wasting your money on impressions because most of the people just ignore ads.

Well, it a question of how extensive your promotion strategy is. If you have a lot a cash and can pay for a lot of impressions, I donīt think the difference is that much. After some initial research (e.g. banner exchange, but you need to have access to another site that can give you the number of impressions you need to do the research), you should see a pretty stable CTR from your banners. that being said, the rest is just math! Impressions*CTR=Clicks.

An interesting question about both of these services is what kind of traffic will it bring you? It is at least interesting for pages that buy potential customers (as opposed to sited that base their income on reselling the traffic). Is there a difference between the two options in terms of generating sales? My initial thoughts on that are that "Pay per clicks" are better. I, at least, only use them when I am looking for something specific, but I occasionally click banners just because I am curious.
