You know, some fine wines take quite a while to ferment... I'll have something hopefully by my Monday morning (or your Monday evening, I guess). :-)

Of the 506 W3C members, only 18 have sites with valid HTML (or XHTML). That’s a whopping 3.6% of W3C members. Conspicuously missing from the ranks of the standards–compliant: Microsoft, Netscape, IBM, Sun Microsystems, and Apple Computer.

Really makes me wonder why I care sometimes...

Here I am, busting my chops to make my work validate, to follow standards, to be unquestionnably compliant and for what? So that about 1000 person a year will see my site and about 2% of them will even notice. Guess it's a question of personal ego.

Then you look at those people, who are supposedly the best of our field, those we look up to and they don't even make it happen... How can I convince fellow developers to follow my lead when those that show me the way don't even do their job?

Probably because the best in our field (and I assume you mean the professionals making most of the money ) are coding for everyone still. They are more worried about coding for 99.9% of the browsers than coding for the new browsers and increasing the standards. I think for now if you are programming between 90 and 95% validity you are ok. Just because right now unless you want to alienate the rest you would do around that level.

Or, maybe it's because large companies are all hocking their products and services and have failed to invest much in making their innovative ideas standards compliant. Do we really expect Macromedia, Netscape, Adobe, or Microsoft to be fully standards compliant?

I'll tell you something though which is not to do with standards, but Microsoft's research into accessibility and the level of control over accessibility elements in their operating systems is pretty impressive.

It's good to see that you take pride in your work. It will pay off for you in the long run. Attention to detail is the key to coding well.

BTW, I never validate, though I should. I just never really thought about it until you posted this thread.

2% of 1000 person is 20 person. With you acknowledging, I only neeed another 19 to make my year worthwhile. Thanks Moonspot. I appreciate it.

You should visit http://www.w3.org. You can use their HTML and CSS validators to validate your documents.
