How does the system for banner ads work? Do I have to pay n$ for n weeks? Or is it until a certain amount of clicks, or any other? Is it recommended to make banner ads on highly popular sites like Yahoo! or Lycos?
What is the usual amount of money which one gives out for one banner place?

There are three methods for which you can purchase banner advertisments:

Pay for a set number of impressions

Pay for a set number of click-thrus

Pay a sponsorship fee, where your banner is shown for n ammount of time

#1 and #2 are the most common methods used.
Last time I checked Yahoo! charges $10 CPM (that means 10,000 impressions for $100, which is Yahoo!'s minnimum).
I would suggest purchasing targeted ads. Find websites related to your topic, and contact them about their rates.

Impressions are measure in CPM which stands for Cost per Thousand impressions. An impression is every time a page is loaded, or in your case ever time your banner is shown.
CPC is Cost per Click-through. What that means is you get paid only when someone clicks on your banner. 10 cents, 20 cents, 35 cents, the rate vary.
Generally CPM is more attractive to website publishers since it generates more money, and usually only the small sites use CPC, or only large sites that don't have all their AD inventory filled.
