PHP train wreck... need some help

I'm trying to install the sphider search engine on my site, but it doesn't get to far...

Why is there such a bad crash? I have the database and username/password set in the settings file. Not sure what to do... might be a server/php.ini issue?

This code is written with short-tags, which has been deprecated for years. Replace <? with <?php

The PHP script isn't being parsed, most likely because PHP is either not installed on your server or because it is not configured properly. Go back to the PHP installation instructions and try installing it again.
