Best way to edit the WordPress layout/presentation?

I just installed WordPress and have the default theme installed.

I would like to change the design up quite a bit (visually) and was wondering where to start. Could I just edit the 'Default' theme pages or is there a better way?

    Thanks
    Ryan

Depends on your own skill level I guess. You've got a few choices:

    1. Edit the default theme
    2. Go find a theme that works better for you without any editing
    3. Go find a theme that needs less editing to get what you want
    4. Start from scratch and build your own theme

I don't see anything wrong with any of these approaches although you do have to be slightly careful with new themes - some are better than others code-wise.

I would probably do option 3 that tailslide suggested so you can learn your way around the code. Find a theme with a layout that is closest to what you are looking for and then modify it to suit your needs.

I like to find a theme that I like, and then modify it using the basic knowledge that I have. I can usually do this using code that other people have already created, as well as plugins, and other theme edits.
You can usually create something decent using this technique.

I would personally install about 5 or more free themes when you first start using wordpress. Edit a theme which you think is closest to what you want and then refer to the other themes coding when you are unsure about something

I create my "wrapper" in photoshop and some other design elements and then work on the default skin. I don't like using other people's themes anymore.. I lose more time tweaking them than doing my designs

You can find a lot of free themes over the internet. If you want something special, you can always hire some one to design it for you. This will save you a lot of time from designing 1 new theme for your blog

I just ended up editing the default theme and functions included with it.

A major pain in the ***, but as long as all the other functions keep running I'm cool

It will use a similar layout to default (change dimensions a bit), changed both backgrounds, changed headers, titlebard and all that good stuff.

A lot of hard coding. Widgets -- I love them and hate them.

It's a good idea to rename your theme when you're done and switch to the new name in your admin area. When you upgrade to a new version of WordPress in the future, you might accidentally overwrite your theme if it's named "default".
