    ./configure
    make
    make install

will install a program from the source. This means it will be compiled and installed on your system without using any package management system.

So its a bit like apt-get apart from apt-get is an a packaging tool.

I have read that link you provided, i have the php manual in .chm format, and this is what i was reading that caused the problem in the first place.

Im running linux, so im not sure where i would use ./configure. The link you provided dont really explain how to use it, just tells you how to install cURL, which brings me to square one about how to compile PHP.

PHP is already configured so id need to just add the curl package.

Any more advice or links? My mindstate at present is confused, its most likley a simple task that when ive done it ill be like 'oh yeah' but im telling myself its difficult when it probably isnt.

It's just part of the installation process. See this: http://www.codecoffee.com/tipsforlinux/articles/27.html

There are quite a few things, which people who are already comfortable with Linux, take for granted, and which isn't as obvious when you're new to it. So don't be hard on your self for not grokking everything at once.
