This might sound silly but i'm having problems with my files. I uploaded several .doc (word documents) files and added a link for anyone who wants to download them from my page but for some reason when i click on the document link the file starts to download right away and when it's done it opens inside my browser. I know perfectly that when you click on a .exe .zip and all those files a window should pop up asking you where to save the file and then show you the progress but for some reason that's not happening here.
That's because the .doc format is not a compressed or exectuable format filetype, so most browsers will simply download the said file and load it in the browser window. To alleviate this problem, simply right-click in the link to the document and choose "Save Target As..." or "Save Link As...". If your site visitors are experiencing the same problems, just add a little note at the top of the page telling them to right click, et cetera. It actually works quite well.

I was trying to download the files using IE, then i decided to try it with netscape and opera, the download window popped up for this two. So i guess it's mainly an IE thing. Adding a note for visitors sounds like a good solution.
Yep. Since both Word and Internet Explorer are Microsoft products, they want them to work seamlessly -- even if it's not what many users of their software want. But use the note -- it has worked very well on my sites when I had to deal with this situation.
