    508 Compliance Certification?

How does a site go about saying that it is 508 Compliant? Do we use one of the many automated sites like Bobby or Cynthia Says? Or do we have to bring in a trained/certified person to review our site and award us 508 Compliance? Or do we just say we're 508 Compliant and document all our code so if there are any questions we can defend ourselves?

Any direction for these questions is much appreciated.

It's been my experience that some automated systems do work well (for example, link checkers are usually pretty good) but some of the requirements for Section 508 / WAI adherence really do require manual attention.

The Bobby reports and similar usually end up with a bunch of items that say something like "Warning: check this manually".

I've found more and more sites now are adding accessibility statements to their site. Most are just some text saying that they test the site for adherence to 508 / WAI guidelines, others (like this one: http://www.udm4.com/menu/accessibility) go on to detail how they addressed every step.

As far as certification, you might want to checkout http://www.section508.gov . They have some training courses available. Not sure about "certification" though.

A SitePoint Forums member said it best,
Accessibility is about the user's ability to use the page, which is best checked by another human.
