    Connecting shopping cart to checkout

Ok, I've just learnt how to build my own shopping cart, using Kevin Yank's book, but unfortunately he leaves it at that and I haven't a clue how to connect my cart to an online payment system. I looked at Paypal's documentation and 'clear as mud' comes to mind!

What's the easiest way to connect my php shopping cart with an online payment processor?

Or would I be better trying to figure out how to use (and customise) OSCommerce or similar?

If you write your own shopping cart the odds are you will need to write your own code to content to the payment processor as you will need to hook into your code which is obviously unique. You probably can start with an existing script if one if publicly available which can help guide you along in the process.

How easy or difficult this is to do will vary but the payment method. Authorize.Net is fairly easy. Google Checkout is not. Etc..

So which would you say is the easiest? I'm UK based btw so I'm not sure whether some are available in this country.

After a few "duh!" moments, I realized coding a processor to connect to Authorize.net is pretty easy.

They have sample code to go off of and the manual is fairly thorough.

Plus, there are a few threads on here that will help as well.
No, I REALLY dislike having to use Joomla.

Search for "PayPal IPN" in google. You'll find a lot of good pre-written scripts to connect your items to a payment gateway.

Each payment gateway has their own API so all that script will show you is how to work with the Paypal IPN and only the Paypal IPN. It won't even show you how to connect to Paypal's other services.

All you would need is the web payments standard, which is not an API. Of course you need to have a paypal account. He would have to hard code his shopping cart system for each item to add to the paypal cart. But then checkout through paypal. Its fairly simple to plug in.

Surely IPN is only half of it?

I can't find where it says either way! Anyway I'm looking more at solutions that don't require you to have a merchant bank account.

The only options you have then are third party processors.
