My famliy community wishes to go online, and create a community online. Please let me have your thoughts/ideas/suggestions and key points one should keep in mind when building a community online.
If you want features like free email (someone@yourfamilyname.com would be cool) check out Everyone.net, Bigmailbox.com, Outblaze.com or Northsky.com), For free homepages check out: http://www.webmaster-resources.com/f...ML/000164.html
You can get mailing list services at www.egroups.com (they recently swallowed onelist.com). They also offer scheduling, polls, file storage and other features. Since it is just your family the community will be one of the smaller ones but you can still add some nice close knit features. I am currently building a community site for a religious group I belong to with approx. 100 members offering all the same features listed above. While we hope to grow in the future I don't see the community getting overly large (maybe max 300-400 members in the foreseeable future).

Would you want it to be password-protected or open to people, i.e. family friends?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Egroups has been having some serious problems. Several times I've recieved a letter from their CEO about how sorry he was. Check it out anyways--it has great offerings.

Soon to come: Aspology.com
Besides e-mail and free hompages.. I am looking for more information - like the content, what could this be? and something else the website could have..
Also what about financial support - prospective sponsors could be who??
Don't forget you can add a live chat room to your site so that people can chat in real-time. It's a great way to increase stickiness and promote community.... try http://www.chatpod.com
it's free
