If you want to data on a particular ShowType then it's just a matter of JOINing the relevant tables.

The query below returns some basic data for every Show that is of ShowType XXX, where XXX represents the ShowTypeID of the required ShowType . The ShowTypeID has been used but the Show.TypeName could be used but would require a further JOIN using the ShowType table.

    Code:
    SELECT	S.ShowName,
    		S.ShowDate,
    		S.ShowTime,
    		S.ShowDesc
FROM	Show AS S INNER JOIN
(Artist AS A INNER JOIN ArtistShow AS [AS] ON A.ArtistID = [AS].ArtistID)
    		ON S.ShowID = AS.ShowID
    WHERE	S.ShowTypeID = XXX;
An ID field is typically used in a link (which display the actual name) or in a search form listing the different ShowTypes.

    Attached is the db diagram.

As for DB courses, I think if you can find a decent one it'd be worth it (here's the one I took). Having said that many of the people I work with haven't any formal DB design training but are very knowledgable and skilled. Experience counts for a lot.

Shane...crap...I'm walking out to go home and I just noticed this. I'll have to look at it in detail more tomorrow morning.

Thanks in advance (before I read it).

I kind of stepped out of this a bit because I thought Shane understood your requirements a bit better than I did, but something he showed prompted me to jump back into this conversation...

You were of the opinion that the event and show tables I designed were one and the same so you felt you could get rid of this. Then I saw Shane posted this:

TV Taping - a one night show
Club Shows - These shows will make up the bulk of the DB as there are 4*20*5 artists performing over the 5 days.
I am working on the assumption that you are following the same basic design I worked up except you combined the show and events table. IF this list that shane posted is reminiscient(sp?) of the types of shows that you will be tracking, how will you track of the dates that each artist are playing in the club shows? If you don't want to keep my design (which is cool since it's your job and I can kinda see your point), then you will at the very least need to include time and date on the ShowArtist table.

I'm not sure there's a problem Dave. There may be many Shows of ShowType 'Club Show' but as each of these Shows will only last one day the date of the Show can be used to find the dates on which an Artist plays Shows of ShowType 'Club Show'.

Dave...you're obviously more experienced at db design than I am, but if I put showtime and showdate in the ShowArtist table, wouldn't that be duplicating the information from the Show table?

Not if you have a five day event and the artist only plays one date. That's why I had the event and the show. The show was each day, the event covered all five days....

Just wondering how this project is progressing, if at all. We all worked hard discussing it, so it would be nice to see it reach fruition....

Looks like it's doing alright, apart from the odd minor problem.

    Thanks for mentioning this Dave...

You can see the site at http://intranet.nashvillecvb.com/tinpansouth

It's working perfectly thanks in no small part to your help and the help of the other guys who contributed. In fact, I'm gonna recommend that the organization putting on this event use this database permanently. That will make my job next year much easier.
