uhmm..... www.albinator.com refers to a free online photo album service... at www.albinator.com NOT for your own website...

I don't believe the question was attaining to a user wanting to post her/his pics on someone else's website...

    Regardless of that fact...

the actual product is *NOT* free... but rather a hefty $100 for a single domain license…

    http://www.albinator.com/product/pricing.php

All in all... "gallery" is my favorite... has tons of 'usefull' features...

yes it has search, rating, mass photo uploads, zip support, commenting, categories, etc etc... and all other standard features... plus it looks nice and the look is easily configurable... so what RobyinJ qouted about gallery not supporting all that... he may have been referring to an old version... cause the new is all good...

'don't be hatin' and start participatin'...'

    peace out...

Add in another vote for Gallery. It's got all the features I would ever want (even lots I don't use).

And since it's open source, theres all kinds of cool mods for it to do anything you want it to, like create an "email this pic to a friend" link or integrate with lots of other cool open source programs.

And the free java program is awesome to let non-geek people add their own photos through a nifty and easy to use drag and drop interface.

It uses the NetPBM libraries to deal with the images, which is much faster and less server-intensive that the graphic libraries in php, so it works better, and it can do other cool things like rotate pictures, add a shadow, change the thumbnail, etc.

    Talking 4images Gallery

I've been looking for a photo gallery script for a long time. And I just recently found one I really love: http://www.4homepages.de/

The site is in German, but if you go to their download section, you just have to download the english pack along with the script itself, upload, and then install. Installation is very simple too.

The best thing about it is that it allows you to use GD, NetPBM, or ImageMagick to generate the thumbnails. You also have the option of creating your own thumbnails manaully too. You can also customize the themes.

    Some examples:
    english with cat theme
    english with pucca theme
    english with blue computer theme
    spanish theme

    good info daynah...

even though someone else posted this link before, you're the first to point out it actually has an *English* version... --looking at the site itself (german) you get the idea that there wasn't one...

I definitely like the look... the english examples are a real help...

I haven't checked out its code yet, so I don't know anything other than that it 'looks good'... but i will definitely in the near future...

    thanks again for the info..

There is one gallery app that uses PHP/MySQL, but does NOT create thumbnails for you (provided that's not a big deal for what you're after).

www.slooze.com allows for people to add comments to each picture and also to rate them. There is also an "admin" screen which allows for adding categories and subdirectories, etc.

The site has examples and extensive documentation. Like I said, about the only thing it's missing is dynamic thumbnailing...

Imagefolio is $89 for the "basic" version and they even charge you for mods. ($49 to add postcard functionality, etc...)

    I second 4images.
I've been using it for sometime.
If you want to see it live, click the following link -> http://anime-anime.com/manga/

I used to use Gallery, but I disliked the fact that the development was too slow.
My chooses were either 4images or albinator, but Albinator seemed way too costy (core scrpit for $100, addtional add-ons cost at least $50+ each. That means in order to make a fully working and featured scirpt, it'd cost you more than $300)

Too bad you can't use it on your OWN webserver. Hint the thread name "scripts", we want to be able to use them on our own web servers.

You can. The owned license allows you to download the script, the core script I should say.
But the downside is the core script does not offer useful things, such as commenting, category, search and so on.
Each of the feature costs around 50~ 100 buks in name of "Add-on".

None of these suit my needs; I don't need user registration stuff; all I want is a basic image gallery script that has hits, possibly rating and comments, descriptions (a must), and that's all.

I may have to settle for doing it in HTML, which I wouldn't want to do.

You can turn user thingy off in 4images. Simply remove the login code from templates and set permission to "all", everyone can comment, rate and vote.

Not bad at all. Tho' I'm spoiled by "Auto-thumbnail creation" and won't use a gallery script that doesn't support it. Making thumbs is relatively easy, but I don't like to waste the time....

Sorry to bust out the shovel and dig up an old thread, but I've been looking for photo gallery software as well. I downloaded this and will try to install it in the next few days!

well i think photopost is a oldie now ... i saw these reviews of it, not good:
    http://www.hotscripts.com/cgi-bin/review.cgi?ID=16547

i think Albinator is doing much better and their cost is less too now around 99 bucks inclusive everything (all add ons) ... it is the only one supporting postnuke ...

If you end up going with Gallery, and also run phpBB2 on your site, I would highly recommend the Integration Mod by SnailSource. It adds a whole slew of new management features which really give it some kick.

I'm friends with the developer of SnailSource, and he is a very stand-up guy who gives excellent support for his scripts and mods. Definitely worth a look!
