    Arrow Please review this website

    Hi guys,

Just looking to get some general feedback on the following site, it's a gambling based website in the UK. Please be honest in what you post, negative feedback is just as good as positive imo so let me know your thoughts:

    UK Online Casino

    Thanks in advance

Like the design. The only small negative point I have there is that I found the vertical text very difficult to read.

Look into putting in place a canonical name redirect as you are leaving yourself at risk of a duplicate penalty in the search engines. (And in your competitive area I'm sure your competitors would be happy to do anything to help cause that if they can). It may also split link popularity if people link to both versions.

I have mixed feelings about your approach to 404s. You are at least returning the correct status code in the first instance (before redirecting) and redirecting to the home page is probably fine for people coming in to the site on old links (although even there I'd be looking to redirect them to a page closer to what they were looking for). In the event of any problems causing bad internal links though I would be very put off to be dumped back at the homepage rather than having some sort of explanation.

The articles are a good idea from novice user and SEO points of view. While they may only have a small (if any) effect, it would be nice to get article specific keywords and, particularly description, on the articles. A description relevant to a search may also be used in the SERPs making it clearer to the searcher that this page is what they are looking for.

The main problem I have with it is that the home page is all navigation. You have to scroll down to see any kind of content. You have a lot of content and good reviews and I think you could use your home page more effectively to display this content.

I agree with Fremeere that the vertical navigation is hard to read. I don't like the banner on the home page. The whole site is quite static too. I know there are gambling affiliate programs that offer live banners with sporting events updated all the time. I think this helps keep your site changing day-to-day and also encourages people to bet.

On the home page I would remove those large category links and the banner. Highlight that blue bar under the logo which briefly explains the site - make it bigger, it's very small. Replace the banner and images with top 5 poker/casino/blackjack sites, latest sporting events you can bet on with live scores, latest article, latest review, casino of the month, casino special deals, etc. The 'Welcome...' text I think should be on a separate About Us page.

That very top line you have - UK Online Casino, Best UK Poker Software, Top UK Casino Software, Best UK Online Casinos - I know is for search engines, but it looks crap. Remove it and push your site up.

In summary, you have good content and loads of links, I think it could be organised better to be more user friendly. Also look at getting live info to keep the site fresh.

thanks for the detailed feedback and comments guys much appreictaed, some constructive comments i can work with there, it's nice to get mixed views on various things too, for example the idea of having banners that change, yes companies do offer this but overall they can be annoying and there's nothing worst than a flash animated gif when your trying to browse the site, so far i've found static advertisements to work better than flashing banners

also, what is canonical name redirect?

    Cheers, Alan

Yeah, I don't mean crazy flashing banners where you have to hit a monkey. I mean live info. This can be done with feeds and JS apps too.

Canonical name redirect is that http://onlinegaming4u.co.uk/ and http://www.onlinegaming4u.co.uk/ are seen as 2 separate sites (with and without the www.). You can fix this in your .htaccess file. Check out - http://www.seo-consultant-services.c...-problems.html

    Images are just too good.

The site loads quite fast and the images are just too good. I likethe design too and the articles are a good idea from novice user and SEO points of view. But I found the vertical text very difficult to read.

Looking at it in the aspect of just a regular visitor it looks really good, very fast loading, easy to navigate and understand. And it looks clean, doesn't look like the longer I stay or deeper I go the more chance of adware or spyware or something like that, that alot of competitors sites sometimes give the impression of, especially the ones that try to force downloads or the like.
I like the sites look and feel, good job.....

if you read into the code properly like a proper web designer you will find that the data you have quoted is tabular data for a list of top 10 gaming websites not anavigation at all... the breaks in the text where used instead of table rows as i was already using a dirty table for data, although this is allowed for listing data i thought the shorter the table code the better

as for the other comments, thanks for taking time out to comment folks much appreciated

I don't like the background, the text is so hard to read it's not worth being there. But i can't find a fault in anything else i can see.

    Still nice work

There's good information and it is clean. I do think it is a bit "plain" and could use some more content besides just tips. The colors are also very dull. Making all the reading a little tiresome. In IE7 there doesn't appear to be any type of grid layout. Looks as though content boxes are overlapping or each is sized/positioned differently You should work on your grid for the site to help it flow a little better or if you like to spend some bucks to get the necessary makeover then consult a web design company for related improvements. Still personally I think you need to have a really sweet homepage to ignite the viewers interest in clicking through.

I really cant fault your website. You have an excellent range of complimentary colours, and you have an excellent choice of padding. The text is very easy to read, and although you have a lot of content on your pages, I wasn't put off at all. Well done.

    Nice work

I think the header is very elegant in keeping with the feel of the site. With the present color of the page I would be afraid that a splash of color there would keep dragging the eyes upward. The only thing I would consider changing would be perhaps a small sample thumbnail or two mixed into the main content area of the front page to give it a little more life, earlier when I was at then I too customize the design of one of the web design company client in that way but I'd have to see it that way to be sure. Your’s is actually really good as is.

I think that the design is good, but it maybe a bit busy with all the pictures. I would say take out all the small pictures and put in a few bigger ones.
