I just received a newsletter that had something like this in it "Register “KEYWORD RICH” domain names that are going to help skyrocket your search engine rankings! "

It was talking about registering very long domain names.

This may be a stupid question but here goes.

Do search engines really know if www.TreeCuttingCompanyFromAustraliaToCutYourTrees.com contains all those keywords?

To me it sounds like a big con job, wouldn't hyphens (-) be the way to go?

My point is, that domain would be just one big word as far as any search engine is concerned.

Most, if not all search engines check if the keyword is CONTAINED in the meta tags, page, and URL, not if $keyword=$url or similar statements. The long domain names are as of now, supposedly not accepted by Yahoo, which is a big thumbs-down.
