Reseller Account - But Not Reselling

Hi there.

I currently have a series of websites hosted with HostGator. The thing is, having a series of shared hosting plans starts to add up after a while. What I was considering was purchasing a reseller account (which will save us about $15/month) and then just hosting all our websites from there, obviously, not reselling the plans, just using them internally. For the savings, it seems like a logical thing to do. When we purchased shared plans, I bought bigger plans than we need, expecting the sites to grow (which some have, others have not).

Has anyone done this? Do you suggest it? Would there be a better way than buying a reseller account (We can't afford a dedicated server quite yet)?

This is a common thing to do, with little in the way of downsides.

On the way to getting a dedicated server you might find a VPS makes sense as you grow.

Since you're after saving some $$, depending on how much you use space and data transfer wise, you could fit into their smallest but unpublished reseller package. Contact sales and ask for that package's specifications.

Yes, sometimes I prefer to have a few reseller account and a vps or two above having a dedicated server so all my eggs are not in one basket.

Most of the people start like this. They start with shared hosting and when they have enough shared hosting account they order reseller account and than VPS or own dedicated server There is nothing wrong with this.

What is Reseller Hosting?

The reseller purchases a large chunk of web space and bandwidth from the web hosting company and can then carve that into individual chunks of space/bandwidth for sale to customers. The web host provider provides you with the information and admin control tools you need to transparently offer their services as your own. They will do all hardware and software system administration necessary, as well as be your second line technical support engineers if you have a problem and you can't answer it.

Not sure how important this part is for original poster but he has all his shared hosting accounts with HostGator than the chances are that he is on the same IP for all his accounts.

Not necessarily. If he bought the accounts at different points in time, they're quite likely on different servers and thus IPs. Hostgator's been filling servers quite fast.

Because the datacenters don't give them lightly either. IPs must be used, not wasted, and most datacenters go further than that and consider it a waste to use IPs when they're not really necessary.

Yes, you do. Unless a domain is using SSL or needs Anonymous FTP, then it doesn't need a dedicated IP address, it is a waste of a finite resource that is running out rapidly - Yes we have IPv6 which solves it somewhat (but not if IP addresses are handed out like there's no tomorrow), the only problem with IPv6 is that it's v. poorly supported, even by major carriers and it's looking like we'll have run out of "normal" IP addresses before everyone is truly ready for IPv6 addresses.

One may buy more IPs from 247-host.com. I don't think that the person will need one hundred IPs.

the concept looks good to me.....you shouldnt be having any problems....although try for a VPS if you think so in the near future.
