selecting first character of a field

Not sure if this is an SQL thing or if I should be doing this in Coldfusion.

What I would like to do is select the first character from an entry in a field in a database and show it on the coldfusion page.

Is this possible with SQL?

You can use LEFT(yourField, 1) in SQL.
