    Screen Reader Testing

    Hi all,

How important is it to actually test websites on screen reader software? And what's best way to do that? by software or online services?

    Thanks
    Ken

It's only a brief insight, but you can get an idea of a screenreader users' perspective from this video.

And here's a list of free screenreader options: http://www.benjaminhawkeslewis.com/w...n-readers.html

Screen readers are difficult to use and a sighted person cannot easily use it the way a blind user would. Experts say that you need to turn off your computer monitor and use the screen reader (for everything, not just for surfing) for at least a couple of months to really learn.

I think the best way to test is to hire one or more blind users to do it.

i agree with AutisticCuckoo to hire one or more blind users to do it, as i downloaded one a few months ago to test and found it extremely difficult to get used to. plus i knew the site that i was testing back-to-front so nothing would've come as a surprise

The importance of testing this depends on the type of site you are developing. If you make a site for online video gaming, you can assume that most users can see ok and will not have any special visual needs. Whereas an insurance website will need to have every accessibility technology available.
